Melasma is seen as a tan to brown pigment on the cheeks, above the lip, on the forehead, and sometimes the chin. It is due to the influence of female hormones and ultraviolet sunlight. Both pregnancy and birth control pills can induce the pigmentation. Treatment consists of broad spectrum sunscreens in combination with sun avoidance. Topical bleaching medicines, lasers, and peels are often helpful.
