Treatment Options for Spider Vein Therapy

spider vein therapy

Spider veins are those unsightly bluish-purple veins just beneath the surface of the skin that resemble spider webs. They are also called threat veins and are a form of venous insufficiency. Unlike varicose veins that are usually like ropes on the surface of the skin, spider veins are flat. They are usually harmless and painless, but you may be happier to have them removed. We offer several options of spider vein therapy.

Causes of Spider Veins

Most people with spider veins have a family history of spider veins. Women are more prone to get them than men and older people are also more prone than younger people, although anyone, even infants, can develop them. Pregnancy and obesity are two other causes of spider veins.

Treatments

Laser treatment may be a good option for smaller spider veins. The laser beam is directed at the spider vein and passes through the surface of the skin to damage the vein and make it close and dry up. No injection is needed, so laser treatment is less invasive than sclerotherapy. It may require a series of laser treatments spaced weeks apart if the spider veins are large.

Light therapy is different than laser therapy because it uses a broad spectrum of light rather than a single wavelength as in laser therapy. It may be effective for small spider veins, vascular birthmarks and certain varicose veins. We may recommend this treatment for people who don’t like needles or for whom laser therapy is not effective.
